Why Choose the Name Aurai?

Naming a new product or company is a fun and challenging process.  There are endless possibilities.  Before the details of our naming process gets clouded by the passage of time, I thought I’d take a few moments to capture how and why we chose the name Aurai.  Let’s start with our primary criteria for the name… we want the name to have a direct connection to “air”.  The data science in our platform involves air, the movement of air, or the cleaning of air.  And so the search for a name related to air began.  We considered words from sailing; perhaps a word related harnessing the wind.  We considered words from mythology, as they are often interesting.  We considered other words related to air.  In the end, it didn’t take long for Jim Heising—our intrepid Chief Technology Officer—to suggest Aurai.  In Greek mythology, the aurai are the Greek Goddesses of the breezes.  This suggestion gave us a direct connection to air.  As a bonus, the name has the appeal of ending with the letters AI, which stand for Artificial Intelligence—an integral part of our platform.  And that’s how we chose the name Aurai.  For the record, other names we considered included Abeam, Azimuth, Bowsprit, Leeward, and Windward.
